General Questions
What is SportMatch, and how does it work?
SportMatch is a talent identification and analytics platform that uses predictive data and testing to match individuals with sports they are most suited for. By analysing physical, fitness, and performance metrics, SportMatch creates personalised athlete profiles, compares them to elite sports benchmarks, and calculates suitability using overlap scores.
Who can use SportMatch?
SportMatch is designed for individuals, schools, sports clubs, and organisations such as talent scouts, institutes, and professional teams. Whether you're an aspiring athlete, a PE teacher, or a coach looking to assess talent, SportMatch can support your needs.
Is SportMatch suitable for all age groups?
SportMatch primarily focuses on individuals aged 8–18 years, as this is a critical period for physical and athletic development. However, it can also provide valuable insights for older athletes or individuals exploring new sports pathways.
Testing and Data
What kind of tests are included in SportMatch?
SportMatch includes various physical performance and fitness tests, such as vertical jump, standing broad jump, beep test, sit-and-reach flexibility, sprint testing, and basic anthropometric measures like height, weight, and arm span. These tests help build a comprehensive profile of an athlete's physical capabilities.
How Does SportMatch's 'Sport Prediction' Work?
SportMatch identifies suitable sports for each user by analysing the data provided. Key metrics such as height, weight, arm span, and fitness components like vertical jump, sit-and-reach flexibility, and beep test performance are used to build an athlete profile.
This profile incorporates both current measurements and predictive analytics to estimate future performance and physical attributes. The more data provided, the more accurate the predictions.
Athlete profiles are then compared against data from elite sports to calculate an "overlap score," which measures the degree of similarity between the user and the physical demands of specific sports. A higher overlap score indicates a stronger match or suitability for that sport.
Has SportMatch Been Validated?
Yes, SportMatch has been validated through various methods and trials. Retrospective data analysis of elite athletes revealed that SportMatch accurately predicted their current Olympic sports based on historical testing data from their developmental years. In nearly all cases, the athlete's current sport ranked within their top five best-matched sports and was consistently in the top seven.
In trials with AFL players and draftee's, players ranked in the top 10% by SportMatch at the AFL Combine were 2.5 times more likely to be drafted than lower-ranked players. Similar validation outcomes were observed in NBA and NFL draft combines.
SportMatch was also used to assess state-representative under-15 and under-18 hockey players. Hockey consistently ranked in the top five sports out of over 170 evaluated. Furthermore, overlap scores improved as the quality of the hockey players increased, with scores approaching 100 (indicating perfect suitability) as athletes progressed from U15 to U18, where competition and selection pressures were higher.

Can I customise the testing process?
SportMatch currently does not offer customised testing options. However, we value feedback and are open to suggestions. Feel free to share your ideas with us at [email protected].
How Often Should Someone Be Re-Tested to Track Progress?
Frequent testing improves the accuracy of predictions. Regular re-testing allows for detailed monitoring and analytics. For larger groups, a practical schedule is every two to three months. This provides valuable insights into development trends and helps inform training strategies.
Does the Testing Require Expensive Equipment?
No, most of the physical performance tests require simple and inexpensive equipment.
- Height and arm span can be measured against a wall.
- Vertical jump can be tested using chalk and a flat wall surface.
- Standing broad jump only needs a flat, non-slip surface and a tape measure.
- Sit-ups and shuttle tests require a stopwatch and someone to count. Free recordings for the Shuttle (beep) or Yo-yo test are available on YouTube.
- Sprint test can be measured using manual timing with a stopwatch. If manual timing, we recommend a minimum distance of 40m for better accuracy.
- Other tests can be completed with basic equipment and sufficient space.
Stay tuned to SportMatch news for updates on upcoming tools to automate data capture. We are currently working with engineers and software specialists to automate all the data collection for each of the tests. These will be released as soon as we refine their accuracy. They will be functional on late model smartphones and tablets.
Are Norms Built Into SportMatch, and Where Do They Come From?
Yes, SportMatch includes norms sourced from global datasets of children aged 8–18 years. These datasets come from published scientific studies, government surveys, private research, and sports institutes worldwide, covering around 68 million profiles for both males and females.
SportMatch enables detailed global comparisons for every variable measured and also offers localised comparisons using country-specific or regional norms, such as European or North American standards.

Can I access SportMatch on mobile devices?
Yes, SportMatch is accessible via both mobile devices and desktop platforms, ensuring a seamless experience whether you're using a smartphone, tablet, or computer.
